Objective: To provide a theoretical knowledge of fundamental chemistry and to make the scientific background stronger for engineering discipline students.

Unit 1: Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry (Dr. SG, Lecture Hours – 5): Hyperconjugation; inductive, resonance and fields effects; aromaticity, Huckel’s rule; acids, bases and buffers.
Unit 2: Polymers (Dr. PF, Lecture hours - 3): Properties, Industrial polymers, conducting polymers
Unit 3: Quantum Mechanics (Dr. AC, Lecture Hours - 6): Postulates of quantum mechanics, Schrödinger wave equation, Interpretation of wave function, particle in a box, implication of the concepts, Hydrogen atom, Radial and angular wave functions, Shapes of orbital, Structure and Bonding.
Unit 4: Organic Reaction Mechanism and Fundamentals of Bioorganic Chemistry (Dr. SG, Lecture Hours - 5) Stereochemistry; organic reaction mechanism; bioorganic chemistry.
Unit 5: Electrochemistry (Dr. PF, Lecture Hours - 2): Electrochemical corrosion and fuel cells
Unit 6: Spectroscopic Techniques (Dr. AC, Lecture Hours - 3): Introductory ideas of molecular spectroscopy, Vibrational and Rotational motion, Electronic Absorption and Emission Spectroscopy,
Unit 7: (Dr. SG, Lecture Hours - 4) Fats, oils and detergents, paints, lubricants, natural and synthetic rubbers, synthetic dyes, cements, explosives and propellants, plastic.
Unit 8: Kinetics and Catalysis (Dr. PF, Lecture hours – 3): Theories of chemical reactions, homogenous and heterogeneous catalysis
Unit 9:Thermodynamics (Dr. AC, Lecture Hours - 4): Statistical Concept of Entropy, Free energy and Spontaneous Change, Chemical equilibrium, Chemical Potential, Phase Transitions.
Unit 10: Nanomaterials (Dr. PF, Lecture hours – 2): Introduction, Synthesis of nanomaterials, properties and applications
Unit 11: Coordination compounds (Dr. PF, Lecture hours 3): Crystal field theory, colour and magnetic properties
